14K costs more because every gram of it holds about 40% more pure gold, and gold is the expensive part. Divide the stamps: 585 / 417 = 1.40.

Worked example (weights only, no prices): a 10 gram chain holds 10 x 0.417 = 4.17 g of pure gold in 10K, or 10 x 0.585 = 5.85 g in 14K. That is 1.68 g more gold in the 14K chain.

The shelf price gap between two matching designs is often smaller than the gold gap, because the price also includes design, casting, finishing and the seller's margin, none of which change with karat.
