- 10kt = 10K = 10 karat = 10 of 24 parts gold = 41.7% (stamp 417).
- Pure gold in a piece = weight in grams x 0.417 (10 g gives 4.17 g).
- "kt", "k" and "karat" all mean the same thing on gold; "carat" with a c is the UK spelling for gold and the gem weight word everywhere else.
- Solid 10K is real gold. A piece described as "10K plated" or "gold tone" is not solid 10K.
- We do not sell solid gold; our gold pieces are 18K gold plated.
What percentage of gold is 10K?
10K gold is 41.7% gold by weight. The karat scale divides gold into 24 parts, so 10 karat means 10 parts gold: 10 / 24 = 0.4167, which is 41.67%. Jewelers round that up and stamp it as 417, meaning 417 parts per 1,000.
You may see 14K quoted as both 58.3% and 58.5%. Both are right: 14 / 24 is 58.33%, and the standard stamp for 14K is 585. The same small rounding happens at 10K, where the arithmetic gives 41.67% and the stamp says 41.7%. For what the stamp itself tells you, see what 417 means on jewelry.
10K is how much gold by weight? (gram table)
To find the pure gold in any 10K piece, multiply its weight in grams by 0.417. Here is the math done for common weights:
| Piece weight | Pure gold inside (10K) | Other metals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 0.42 g | 0.58 g |
| 3 grams (a small ring) | 1.25 g | 1.75 g |
| 5 grams (a thin chain) | 2.09 g | 2.91 g |
| 10 grams (a heavier chain) | 4.17 g | 5.83 g |
| 20 grams | 8.34 g | 11.66 g |
Compare the same 10 grams in other karats: 14K holds 5.85 g, 18K holds 7.5 g. Our 10K vs 14K gold decision table shows what that extra gold changes in color, wear and cost.
Is 10kt gold real gold?
Yes, solid 10kt gold is real gold: gold runs through the whole piece, mixed with other metals for strength. In the US, a federal trade regulator's jewelry guidelines treat alloys below 10K as not describable as gold, which makes 10K the lowest karat sold as gold there.
"Real" does not mean "pure". Gold is soft, so nearly all jewelry gold is an alloy; our guide to whether yellow gold is real gold explains the same point for other karats. What makes a 10K claim shaky is not the karat, it is the wording around it: plated, filled or "gold tone" items are not solid 10K, even if a stamp is nearby.
10kt, 10k, 10 karat, 10ct: are they the same?
Yes. On gold they all describe the same purity; the letters differ by habit and region.
| You see | It means | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 10K, 10k | 10 karat gold, 41.7% | US listings and stamps |
| 10kt, 10 kt, 10 k t | Same: "kt" is an abbreviation of karat | Listings, older stamps |
| 10 karat | Same, written out | US text |
| 10ct, 10 carat | Same purity, UK style spelling of karat for gold | UK and Commonwealth sellers |
| 417 | Same purity in parts per thousand | Stamps |
Watch one trap: "carat" is also the weight unit for diamonds and gemstones (one carat is 0.2 grams). A "1 carat" stone and "10 karat" gold are unrelated measures. Sources differ on which abbreviation is correct (k, kt or ct), so treat them as interchangeable when reading a listing.
What is the other 58.3% of 10K gold?
The remaining 58.3% is alloy metal, most often copper and silver, sometimes zinc, and in some alloys nickel or palladium. The mix sets the color (more copper is warmer or rosier, more silver or white metals is paler) and the hardness. The exact recipe varies by maker and is not shown on the stamp. If you have a metal allergy, see the skin note below.
10K gold vs 10K plated: how to read a listing
A solid 10K piece is 10K all the way through; a plated piece has only a thin outer layer of gold over a different metal, and the karat describes that layer, not the whole piece. The two can look the same on a screen and are priced very differently. Use this checklist when reading a listing:
| Look for | Solid 10K means | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| The word "solid" | Stated clearly in the title or description | "10K" appears only in a color name or a tag |
| Words next to the karat | None, or "10K yellow gold" | Plated, GP, GF, filled, overlay, vermeil, gold tone |
| Weight in grams | Given, and sensible for the size | Missing weight on a "solid gold" chain |
| Stamp photo | A clear 417 or 10K mark | No photo of the stamp, or a blurred one |
| Price against weight | Plausible for the gold inside | Far below the metal value of the stated weight |

How much is 10kt gold worth?
10kt gold is worth its pure gold content at the current gold price, less the buyer's margin. The method: weight in grams x 0.417 x today's price per gram. Gold moves daily, so we do not print a per gram number that would be wrong next week. Collect two or three quotes before selling, and expect offers below the raw metal value. This is general information, not financial advice.
10K pays less per gram than 14K or 18K, but it still holds real, refinable gold, so heavier pieces are usually worth a quote.
Is 10K gold hypoallergenic?
Not automatically. With 58% alloy, 10K has more non gold metal against the skin than higher karats, and some alloys include nickel or copper that certain people react to. We found no study comparing karats directly, so this is reasoning from composition. If you react to jewelry, ask the seller for the alloy details and ask a doctor; this is general information, not medical advice. More on the topic: is gold plated jewelry hypoallergenic.
An honest note on our range
AJLuxe does not sell solid 10K gold, or any solid gold. Our gold colored pieces are 18K gold plated, over 925 sterling silver on most pieces and over 316L stainless steel on some, so the karat on our listings refers only to the thin outer layer. Plating wears gradually with use, which is the trade for a far lower price. If a gold look at an everyday price is what you want, these are in stock:
- Heart Initial Necklace ($34.99): personalized letter and heart pendant, 316L stainless steel base with 18K gold plating.
- Initial Tag Necklace ($24.99): a rectangle tag with your letter, 18K gold plated.
- Gold Huggie Earrings ($34.99): 925 sterling silver base with 18K gold plating.

Frequently Asked Questions
10K is how much gold?
10K is 41.7% pure gold, which is 10 parts gold out of 24. A 10 gram piece holds about 4.17 grams of pure gold, and the other 5.83 grams are alloy metals.
Is 10kt gold real?
Yes, solid 10kt gold is real gold at 41.7% purity. It is not real "solid" gold if the listing says plated, filled, overlay or gold tone, because then the karat applies only to a surface layer or not at all.
What percentage of gold is 10K?
10K is 41.7% gold by weight (10 / 24 = 41.67%, stamped as 417). The remaining 58.3% is other metals such as copper, silver or zinc.
How pure is 10 karat gold?
10 karat gold is 41.7% pure, which is the lowest purity normally sold as karat gold in the US. Pure gold is 24 karat (99.9%), so 10K is well under half pure gold.
Is 10kt the same as 10K?
Yes, "kt" is simply an abbreviation of karat, so 10kt, 10k and 10 karat all mean 41.7% gold. In UK style writing you will also see 10ct for the same purity.
How much gold is in a 10K gold chain?
Multiply the chain's weight in grams by 0.417. A 5 gram chain holds about 2.09 grams of pure gold, and a 10 gram chain about 4.17 grams.
Is 10K gold worth selling?
Yes, 10K still contains real gold and has scrap value, though it pays less per gram than 14K or 18K. Weigh the piece, multiply by 0.417, compare with the day's gold price, and get more than one quote.
Is 10K or 24K gold better?
Neither is better in every case: 24K is nearly pure and soft, which suits bullion and investment, while 10K is tougher and cheaper, which suits jewelry worn daily. Pick by how you will use it.
