Mother of Pearl and Nacre: What They Are and How to Tell Real

What mother of pearl and nacre are, how they differ from a pearl, the colors they come in, how it is used in jewelry, how to tell real from imitation and how to care for it.

What is mother of pearl? Mother of pearl is the smooth, iridescent inner layer of certain mollusk shells, and that layer is made of a material called nacre. The same nacre is what a pearl is built from, which is why the two look related. The difference is where it forms: mother of pearl lines the inside of the shell, while a pearl is a rounded deposit of nacre formed inside the mollusk.
TL;DR
  • Nacre: the material. Tiny plates of aragonite (a form of calcium carbonate) separated by thin organic layers.
  • Mother of pearl: nacre as it lines a shell, cut and polished for jewelry.
  • Pearl: nacre built up in layers around a center inside the mollusk.
  • Colors: white, cream, pink and green are named by one source, with silver-grey, golden and black reported by a retailer.
  • Care: soft cloth, mild soap, lukewarm water. Keep it away from acids, perfume and heat.

"Mother of pearl" and "nacre" are used as if they were the same thing, and "pearl" is thrown in as well. They are related but not identical, and knowing the difference helps you read a jewelry listing correctly. This page explains what nacre is, what mother of pearl is made of, where it comes from, how it is used in jewelry, how to tell real from imitation and how to look after it. If you want the full lineup of pearl varieties instead, see our types of pearls guide.

What Is Mother of Pearl?

Mother of pearl is the iridescent inner layer of a mollusk shell, also called the nacreous layer. An encyclopedia entry on nacre we read gives "mother-of-pearl" as the other name for it and describes it as the inner shell layer produced by some mollusks. A jewelry retailer's guide describes the same thing in plainer words: a smooth, shimmering inner shell layer, found in oysters, abalone and mussels, that is cut into pieces for pendants, earrings, rings and bracelets.

What Is Nacre?

Nacre is a composite material: hexagonal plates of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate, stacked in layers with thin organic sheets between them. The encyclopedia entry puts the plates at about 0.5 micrometres thick and 10 to 20 micrometres wide, and names chitin and silk-like proteins among the organic material. A second reference entry on pearls says the organic compound conchiolin binds the layers, and defines aragonite plus conchiolin as nacre. The two entries name the glue slightly differently, so we describe it simply as an organic matrix.

Nacre is made by the mollusk itself. The encyclopedia entry says bivalves, gastropods and cephalopods from some of the oldest lineages produce it, including pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels and several snail families, among them the abalone family.

Why Does Mother of Pearl Shimmer?

The shimmer comes from structure, not pigment. According to the encyclopedia entry, the plates are about as thick as the wavelength of visible light, so light interferes with itself and produces different colors at different angles. That is why a piece of mother of pearl shifts from white to pink to green as you tilt it, and why a retailer's guide describes real nacre's iridescence as soft and subtly changing with the light.

Mother of Pearl vs Pearl vs Nacre

Term What it is In jewelry
Nacre The layered material itself The material both are made of
Mother of pearl Nacre lining the inside of a shell Flat or carved pieces, inlays, pendants, buttons
Pearl Nacre built up around a center inside the mollusk Round, baroque or drop beads and pendants

A short way to hold it: mother of pearl is the wall, a pearl is a drop, and nacre is what both are made of. A pearl is valued as a gem in its own right for shape, luster and size, which our pearl necklace buying guide explains. Mother of pearl is appreciated for its surface and shimmer.

What Colors Does Mother of Pearl Come In?

The encyclopedia entry lists white, cream, pink and green. A jewelry retailer's guide adds silver-grey, golden and black, and notes that freshwater nacre tends to be lighter while saltwater nacre can be more intense. We did not find a standard color grading for mother of pearl, so treat these as typical ranges, not categories.

How Is Mother of Pearl Used in Jewelry?

It is cut into thin pieces and set or inlaid in metal. The encyclopedia entry lists earrings, pendants, rings, bracelets and brooches, often inlaid in metal with gold, silver or gemstones. You will see it as a flat white panel in a bezel, as a small round disc, as carved shapes or as a patterned inlay. For the broader category, our shell jewelry guide and seashell necklace meaning page cover how shell pieces are worn and what they traditionally symbolize.

How Can You Tell Real Mother of Pearl From Fake?

Look for soft, shifting color and small natural imperfections, not a flawless uniform shine. A retailer's guide we read says genuine nacre feels smooth and slightly cool, is heavier than plastic imitations, and tends to show a layered structure and tiny unique flaws that a flawless synthetic lacks. Treat these as hints, not a lab test. A jeweler can give a firm answer. For the similar question on pearls, see real vs fake pearls.

How Do You Care for Mother of Pearl Jewelry?

Clean it gently and keep it away from chemicals. The retailer's guide recommends a soft cloth with mild soap and lukewarm water, storing pieces separately, and limiting exposure to chemicals, perfume, heat and strong sunlight. The pearls reference adds a useful reason: calcium carbonate dissolves in weak acids such as vinegar, and mother of pearl is made of the same mineral, so skip any acidic or abrasive cleaner. If the piece is also gold plated, our gold plated cleaning guide helps with the metal, and our pearl care guide applies to the shell as well.

Is Mother of Pearl Lucky?

Some sellers say it stands for protection, prosperity and purity, but that is symbolism, not fact. The retailer's guide we read lists those meanings and does not call it lucky in so many words. If a meaning matters to you, treat it as a personal choice and do not rely on it as a promise.

Mother of Pearl at AJLuxe

We carry one mother of pearl piece. The Shell Pendant Necklace in white has a rectangular bezel with a genuine white mother of pearl panel on an adjustable figaro-style chain, and the frame and chain are 18K gold plated, which is plating and not solid gold. The listing states that the base metal under the plating is not independently confirmed, so we make no nickel-free or hypoallergenic claim for it. Stock on this piece is very limited. If you would rather have an actual pearl, see the Freshwater Pearl Necklace, or browse the pearl jewelry collection. Shell and pearl both suit warm-weather looks, as in our beach vacation jewelry guide, though moisture and salt are hard on both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mother of pearl?

It is the smooth, iridescent inner layer of some mollusk shells, made of nacre. It is cut and polished for use in jewelry, buttons and inlay.

What is nacre?

Nacre is a layered material made of tiny aragonite plates separated by thin organic layers, produced by some mollusks. It forms both the shell lining and the pearl.

Is mother of pearl the same as a pearl?

No. They are made of the same material, but mother of pearl lines the shell while a pearl forms as a rounded deposit of nacre inside the mollusk.

What is another name for mother of pearl?

The most common other name is nacre. The shell layer itself is also called the nacreous layer.

Is mother of pearl real shell?

Genuine mother of pearl is real shell material from oysters, abalone or mussels. Imitations made of plastic or glass can look similar, but they lack the layered, softly shifting shimmer.

Is mother of pearl valuable?

Its worth depends on the piece, the metal and the workmanship. We found no standard price range for mother of pearl, so we give none.

Can mother of pearl get wet?

Brief contact with water will not ruin it, but prolonged moisture, acids and heat can harm it, so remove it before swimming or showering and wipe it dry.

Is mother of pearl lucky?

Some sellers link it to protection and prosperity, but that is cultural symbolism and not a documented fact. Choose it because you like it.
