Rolo Chain: What It Is, How It Differs From Cable, and How to Choose One
Written by the AJLuxe team. Updated October 2026.
- Rolo links are round, equal in size and evenly spaced. Belcher is, in most sources, another name for the same design.
- Rolo vs cable: rounder and chunkier (rolo) against more oval and lighter (cable). The names are not strictly standardized, so judge by the photo, not the label.
- It is a sturdy everyday chain for pendants, bracelets and layering. For heavy daily strain, flatter interlocking styles such as curb are usually tougher.
- For a pendant, about 1.5 to 3 mm is the common range; going thicker makes the chain the statement piece.
- We do not currently sell a true rolo chain. The closest real pieces we stock are linked in the honest note below.
What is a rolo chain?
A rolo chain is a chain built from round links of one uniform size, each passing through the next, so the whole length has the same rounded rhythm. Because every link matches, the chain drapes evenly and keeps a pendant sitting centered. It is made in sterling silver, gold, gold plated metals and other alloys, and it is sold from fine, barely-there widths up to thick, solo-wear widths.
You will also see it written as "rolo chain necklace", "rolo link chain", "rolo style chain" or the misspelling "rollo chain". They all point to the same link shape. Some sources say the wire inside each link is half round (rounded outside, flatter inside), others simply describe a round link, so a close-up photo is the safest way to tell what you are buying.
Rolo chain vs cable chain: what is the difference?
The difference is mostly link shape and visual weight: rolo links are round and look a little chunkier, while cable links are usually oval and look lighter. Both are simple, single-link chains where each link is joined to the next at a right angle, which is why listings mix the two names up. Our guide to cable chain bracelets shows the cable look in detail.
Treat any hard rule as approximate. Retailers do not all follow the same naming, so a chain sold as "cable" can look quite round, and a "rolo" can be slightly oval. If the exact shape matters to you, check a close-up image and the listed link width.
Rolo, cable, belcher, curb and box: a quick comparison
Use this table to place rolo among the chains it is most often confused with. Links in the table lead to our single-style guides.
| Chain | Link shape | How it looks and wears |
|---|---|---|
| Rolo | Round, equal size | Even, rounded texture; a little chunkier than cable at the same width |
| Cable | Usually oval, equal size | Simple and light; the classic pendant chain (see chain for pendant) |
| Belcher | Round, often used as another name for rolo | Common UK term; a few sources describe larger, slightly more oval links |
| Curb | Twisted so links lie flat | Flat, shiny, sturdy; see the curb chain necklace guide |
| Box | Square links forming a tube | Smooth, geometric, no gaps; see the box chain bracelet guide |
| Singapore | Small links twisted into a spiral | Sparkly and rope-like; see the Singapore chain guide |
For the whole family side by side, our types of necklace chains guide covers every common style, and the snake chain and figaro chain pages cover two more you may be comparing.
Are rolo chains strong?
A rolo chain is strong enough for everyday wear when it is a sensible width, but how strong it is depends more on wire thickness, how well each link is closed and the clasp than on the style name. Round links spread tension reasonably well, which is why the style is used for pendant necklaces and bracelets.
Where rolo is less tough than flat, tightly interlocked styles such as curb or box is under repeated pulling or a heavy pendant, because a single round link carries the load at its closing point. A thin rolo can still kink or snap if it is caught, so if you want a chain for heavy daily use, step up the width or look at curb. If a chain does break, our guide to fixing a broken necklace chain explains your options.
How to tell a well-made rolo chain
- Links are the same size and shape all the way along, with no squashed or twisted ones.
- Each link closes cleanly, with no visible gap at the joint.
- The clasp matches the chain: a heavy clasp on a very fine chain, or a tiny one on a thick chain, is a weak point.
- The base metal is named (for example 925 sterling silver or gold plated over a stated base), not just "gold tone".
What size rolo chain should you choose?
Match thickness to the job: finer rolo for carrying a pendant, mid widths for wearing alone, and thick rolo only when you want the chain itself to be the statement. Retailers commonly sell rolo anywhere from roughly 1 mm to 5 mm and more, so there is no single "standard" width, and exact figures vary by seller.
| Approximate width | Reads as | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| About 1 to 2 mm | Delicate | Light pendants, initials, layering base |
| About 2 to 3 mm | Minimal but visible | Wearing alone, or with a small charm |
| About 4 to 5 mm | Everyday presence | A standalone chain |
| Over 5 mm | Bold | Statement piece, usually without a pendant |
Our necklace chain thickness guide compares widths in more depth, and chain for pendant explains how to match chain weight to pendant size.
Which length is best?
For most people, 16 to 18 inches sits around the collarbone and 20 inches or more drops lower on the chest, though neck size and neckline change the result. Measure a necklace you already like with a soft tape before you buy; how to measure necklace length walks through it, and the chain necklace length guide shows where every length lands.
How to wear a rolo chain
Rolo works three ways: as a pendant chain, on its own, and in layers. The even round links keep a pendant centered, which is why a fine rolo is a classic choice for initials and charms.
- With a pendant: choose a finer width and a clasp that matches. Browse the chain necklaces collection or the necklaces collection and compare the chain in each photo.
- Worn alone: a mid-width chain works with a plain tee or a neckline that leaves it visible.
- Layered: pair a rounded chain like rolo with a flatter one for contrast, and vary lengths by about 2 inches. See how to layer necklaces and the layered necklaces picks.
If layered chains tangle, how to untangle a necklace chain has a gentle method.
Is a rolo chain good for a bracelet?
Yes, a rolo chain bracelet is a comfortable everyday choice because round links bend smoothly around the wrist. Pick a width you do not mind catching on sleeves, and check the length against your wrist using our bracelet size chart. For more link styles on the wrist, browse the chain bracelets collection and the gold chain bracelet guide.
How to care for a rolo chain
Keep it dry, store it flat or hanging with the clasp closed, and wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing. Plating wears gradually on any plated chain, and water, sweat, perfume and lotion speed that up, so take plated pieces off for showers, workouts and swimming. Storing chains separately stops them knotting; see how to store jewelry properly. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a rolo chain?
A rolo chain is a link chain made of round links of equal size that interlock evenly, giving a smooth, rounded texture. It is usually sold in sterling silver, gold and gold plated versions.
What is the difference between a rolo chain and a cable chain?
Rolo links are round and look a little chunkier, while cable links are usually oval and look lighter. Naming is not strictly standardized, so check the photo and the listed width rather than relying on the label alone.
Is a belcher chain the same as a rolo chain?
In most sources, yes: belcher is the more common name in the UK for the same round-link design. A few describe belcher links as slightly larger or more oval, so the terms overlap rather than split cleanly.
Are rolo chains strong?
They are strong enough for everyday wear at a sensible width, but their strength depends mostly on wire thickness, link closure and the clasp. Flatter interlocking styles such as curb usually hold up better under heavy pulling.
What does a rolo chain look like?
It looks like a row of small, evenly sized rings joined in a line, with a rounded, slightly textured surface. Next to it, a cable chain usually shows longer, more oval links and a lighter look.
What is the difference between a rolo chain and a box chain?
A rolo chain is made of separate round links, while a box chain has square links that form a smooth tube. Box feels sleeker and more rigid; rolo looks softer and more textured.
What size rolo chain is best for a pendant?
A finer rolo of roughly 1.5 to 3 mm suits most pendants, with the thinner end for small charms. Widths vary by seller, so compare the listed millimeters with the pendant's size.
