Which hand does a wedding ring go on? In the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Italy and many other countries, the wedding ring goes on the ring finger of the left hand. In Germany, Poland, Russia, Greece and a number of other countries it goes on the right hand. Neither is a law, and the sources we read agree that today the choice is personal.
TL;DR
  • Finger: the fourth finger, the one next to the little finger, in nearly every custom we read about.
  • Hand: left in much of the English-speaking world and Western Europe, right in a long list of countries in Eastern and Central Europe and parts of Latin America. It depends on where you live and where your family is from.
  • Why left: a popular story says a "vein of love" runs from that finger to the heart. A museum article we read says scientists have discredited it. The real history is a mix of Roman, church and prayer book practice.
  • Sizing tip: fingers are not the same size on both hands, so size the ring for the hand you will actually wear it on.

If you searched this the week before a wedding, the short version is above. If you are curious why the custom exists, or you live somewhere the answer is different, the rest of this guide goes through what the sources say, where they disagree, and what to do if your situation does not fit the usual rule. For what each finger signals more broadly, see our ring finger meaning guide.

Which Finger Does a Wedding Ring Go On?

A wedding ring goes on the ring finger, which is the fourth finger counting the thumb as the first. Every custom described in the sources we read uses that finger once the ceremony is done. One reference encyclopedia notes that older church practice placed the ring on the thumb, index and middle fingers in turn, one for each word of a spoken phrase, and then left it on the ring finger. That is why the fourth finger became the settled spot. We cover how the name came about in why it is called the ring finger.

Which Hand Does a Wedding Ring Go On?

It depends on the country, and the sources do not all agree on the details. The table below combines what a reference encyclopedia, a jeweler's guide and a diamond museum article say. Where two sources contradict each other, we say so rather than pick one.

Hand Countries named by the sources Where sources differ
Left United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Egypt, France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania The encyclopedia says the Netherlands is left only for Catholics, and lists Catalan-speaking parts of Spain as left.
Right Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Serbia, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela The jeweler's guide lists Spain as left. The encyclopedia says most of Spain is right. We could not settle this, so check local custom if it matters.
Moves after the wedding The encyclopedia lists Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Romania and Brazil as places where a ring starts on the right hand and is moved to the left on the wedding day. Romania also appears in the encyclopedia's left list, so practice there may vary.

Customs inside a country also vary by religion and community. The same encyclopedia says a Jewish bride traditionally receives the ring on the index finger of her right hand during the ceremony, and it can later be moved to the left ring finger. It also says that among Sinhalese and Tamil couples, grooms wear the ring on the right hand and brides on the left, and that wearing a ring on the left is becoming more common in India even though the left hand is considered inauspicious there. We are reporting what one reference says, not setting a rule for any community. To see where the ring exchange falls in the service, read our wedding ceremony order guide. If a religious or family tradition matters to you, ask someone from that tradition.

Why Is the Wedding Ring on the Left Hand?

The most repeated explanation is the "vein of love," but there is no proof of it, and a diamond museum article we read says scientists have discredited it. The story goes that ancient Romans believed a vein ran from the left ring finger straight to the heart, called the vena amoris. A jeweler's guide credits the belief to ancient Egypt and Greece instead. Both sources describe it as a belief, not a fact, and the circulatory system does not work that way.

Better documented is the church and legal side. The encyclopedia traces wedding rings to the Roman betrothal ring, the anulus pronubis, and notes that a 1662 English prayer book told the minister to place the ring on the fourth finger of the bride's left hand, which helped fix the custom across the English-speaking world. So the honest answer is that the left hand is mostly a matter of inherited practice, with a popular legend layered on top.

Why Do Some Countries Wear It on the Right Hand?

The sources offer theories, not certainties. The jeweler's guide gives three: that Germanic tribes believed the love vein was on the right, that Protestants in the Reformation wore it on the right to set themselves apart from Catholicism, and that the right hand has long stood for "good" and the left for "bad" in biblical symbolism. We could not verify any of these independently, so treat them as folk history. What is solid is the map above: right-hand wearing is the ordinary custom across a large part of central and eastern Europe.

Where Does the Engagement Ring Go?

In left-hand countries the engagement ring normally goes on the same finger as the wedding ring, and the pair are worn together after the wedding. Our engagement rings versus wedding bands guide explains how the two differ. We did not find a source we could cite for one required stacking order, so which sits closest to the heart is personal preference.

What If You Do Not Follow the Usual Rule?

You can wear it wherever you like, and nobody is obliged to follow the country default. The diamond museum article says there is no right or wrong, and suggests left-handed wearers might choose the right hand to avoid scratching the ring. A jeweler's guide makes the same point about modern practice. A few reasons people choose differently:

  • Your culture or family does it differently. Follow that.
  • Daily use. If one hand does more gripping, work or sport, you may simply prefer the other for the ring. That is a personal reason, not a custom.
  • Comfort. A ring that sits uncomfortably on one hand may fit better on the other, because finger size differs between hands.
  • The ring is a style piece, not a wedding ring. Rings for other meanings are covered in our promise ring finger guide.

One point of reading, which is ours and not from a source: in a country where the left hand is the custom, many people will assume a ring on that finger means married or engaged. If you want to avoid that signal, wear it on another finger.

Getting the Size Right for the Hand You Choose

Size the ring on the hand and finger it will be worn on, since a jeweler's guide notes that finger sizes differ between your two hands. Fingers also change through the day, so measure in the afternoon, not first thing in the morning or when your hands are cold. Our ring size guide and ring size calculator walk through how, and the men's ring size chart covers conversions for larger sizes.

Wedding Rings at AJLuxe, Honestly

AJLuxe sells affordable rings in 925 sterling silver with cubic zirconia stones, not fine jewelry wedding bands, and we do not sell solid gold, platinum or diamond rings. Our CZ wedding ring ($47.99) has a row of brilliant-cut cubic zirconia stones set along a 925 sterling silver band with gold or rhodium plating, in standard ring sizes (check the page for the sizes in stock). Cubic zirconia is a simulated stone, not a diamond. The product page suggests wearing it solo on the left ring finger for the classic bridal placement, which is a suggestion for the usual US custom, not a rule. It suits a placeholder ring, a travel band or a budget wedding, and we do not offer a resizing service, so measure before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hand does the wedding ring go on?

In the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, France and Italy it goes on the left hand, while in Germany, Poland, Russia, Greece and several other countries it goes on the right. The sources we read agree there is no single worldwide rule. Follow your country, your family or your own preference.

Which finger is the wedding ring finger?

It is the fourth finger, next to the little finger. Every custom we read about uses that finger once the wedding ring is on. Only the hand changes from place to place.

Why is the wedding ring on the left hand?

Mainly because of inherited practice: Roman betrothal rings, church ceremonies and a 1662 English prayer book that named the left ring finger. A popular story says a vein runs from that finger to the heart, but a diamond museum article says scientists have discredited that idea.

Can I wear my wedding ring on my right hand?

Yes. A diamond museum article says there is no right or wrong, and many countries use the right hand by custom. Some left-handed people also choose the right hand to avoid scratching the ring.

What does it mean to wear a wedding ring on the right hand?

In countries such as Germany, Poland, Russia and Greece it simply means you are married, because the right hand is the custom there. Elsewhere, people may read a right-hand ring differently, so the meaning depends on where you are.

Can I wear a ring on my left ring finger if I am not married?

Nothing stops you. In places where the left ring finger is the custom, other people may assume the ring signals marriage or engagement. That is our own reading, not a rule from a source, so choose another finger if you want to avoid the question.

Do Jewish couples wear the wedding ring on the right hand?

One reference encyclopedia says the ring is traditionally placed on the bride's right index finger during the ceremony and can later move to the left ring finger. Practice varies by community, so ask someone from your own tradition.

Is the engagement ring worn on the same hand as the wedding ring?

In left-hand countries it normally goes on the same finger, and the two are worn together after the wedding. The order is a personal choice, since we found no cited rule for one stacking order.
