Hypoallergenic Earrings for Sensitive Ears

If earrings make your ears itch, swell, or develop a rash within hours of wearing them, you are not alone and you are not uniquely sensitive. Approximately 15% of women have developed nickel contact …

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes earrings hypoallergenic?

The metal that touches your piercing, mostly the post. "Hypoallergenic" means less likely to cause a reaction, not guaranteed never to. Nickel is the usual trigger, so the useful test is what the post and the base under any plating are made of. On this page that is 925 sterling silver for 46 styles and 316L stainless steel for 5, and each product page states it. Steel contains nickel, which is why we call it hypoallergenic but never nickel-free. If you have a confirmed nickel allergy, ask your doctor before choosing steel.

Is sterling silver hypoallergenic?

It is widely worn by people with sensitive ears, but it is not automatically safe for everyone. In the US, "sterling silver" means at least 925 parts per thousand pure silver (16 CFR 23.5); the rest is other metals, usually copper. The American Academy of Dermatology lists pure sterling silver among the metals to choose if you are nickel allergic, yet a small number of people still react to silver or to the metals alloyed with it. 46 of the 51 styles here sit on a 925 sterling silver base.

Is surgical steel hypoallergenic?

Often tolerated, but it is not nickel-free. 316L stainless steel contains nickel (Cardiovascular Journal of Africa, 2018), so people with a confirmed nickel allergy can still react to it. We call our 316L pieces hypoallergenic and nickel-safe, never nickel-free. Five huggie styles here are 316L steel, four of them in stock. If steel has bothered you before, choose a sterling silver pair instead and read our honest answer on surgical steel.

Is cubic zirconia good for sensitive ears?

The stone is rarely the problem. Cubic zirconia is a lab-made stone set into the earring, and the metal post and setting are what touch your ear. Many styles here use cubic zirconia, never diamonds. What matters is the metal underneath, which is 925 sterling silver or 316L steel depending on the pair and is named on each product page. Read cubic zirconia and sensitive ears for more.

Are nickel-free earrings really hypoallergenic?

Often, but not always. Removing nickel solves the problem for most people with a nickel allergy, but the American Academy of Dermatology notes that a rash from jewelry can also be an allergy to other metals such as brass, palladium, gold or silver (AAD, contact dermatitis). We do not describe any of our earrings as nickel-free: sterling silver is described as sterling silver and 316L as 316L steel, which contains nickel. If you react to a pair, stop wearing it and see a dermatologist.

What should I look for in earrings for sensitive ears?

A named metal, not just the word hypoallergenic. Look for the base metal under any plating, the grade of steel if it is steel, and a finish you know how to care for. Every pair here lists its metal on the product page. If you have a confirmed nickel allergy or a fresh piercing, titanium or niobium is the more cautious choice, and we do not sell either. Our range is for healed ears.

Are these safe for newly pierced ears?

They are not intended for fresh piercings. The Association of Professional Piercers lists implant-grade steel, titanium, niobium and solid 14k or higher gold among suitable initial jewelry and says gold plated, gold-filled and vermeil pieces are not acceptable for fresh piercings (APP, jewelry for initial piercings). Our earrings are plated or polished sterling silver or 316L steel, and none are titanium or niobium. Wait until the piercing has healed and check with your piercer. Three cuff styles here need no piercing at all.

Is everything actually in stock?

No. 44 of these 51 styles are in stock now and the other 7 are sold out. Stock moves quickly on the bestsellers, so the product page shows live availability.

How fast will it arrive?

Delivery times and shipping costs are set out on our shipping page, which is always the current version. Returns are accepted within 30 days for unworn earrings in their original packaging, and return shipping is free. Full terms are on the return and exchange page.

What causes earring reactions?

Most often a nickel allergy. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to nickel and lists earrings, earring backs and watches among the biggest culprits (AAD, nickel allergy). Nickel shows up in brass, in some plated base metals and in steel alloys. Reactions can also come from other metals, and from irritation that is not an allergy, such as a tight back, trapped moisture or soap left on the post.

Is gold-plated safe for sensitive ears?

Only as safe as the metal under the gold. Plating is thin and can wear first where the post rubs, leaving the base metal against your skin. The gold plated pairs here are 18K gold over a 925 sterling silver base, except the five 316L steel huggies, which are plated with 18K gold or rhodium over the steel. Each product page says which. A pair with an unnamed base is the one to avoid.

How do I test if earrings contain nickel?

A dimethylglyoxime (DMG) spot test kit turns pink where a metal releases nickel, so it is a quick screen for a pair of unknown metal. It is a screening test, not a guarantee that a piece is safe, and it cannot tell you whether you personally will react. If you suspect a metal allergy, a dermatologist can confirm it with a patch test.

What are the safest earrings for newly pierced ears?

Implant-grade steel, titanium, niobium or solid 14k or higher gold, according to the Association of Professional Piercers, which says gold plated, gold-filled and vermeil jewelry is not acceptable for a fresh piercing and does not list sterling silver among its suggested materials (APP). Our earrings are sterling silver or 316L steel, so we recommend them for healed piercings only.

Is titanium better than sterling silver for sensitive ears?

For a healing piercing or a confirmed nickel allergy, yes, titanium is the more cautious choice; the Association of Professional Piercers describes it as ideal for people with nickel concerns. For healed ears without a known allergy, sterling silver is a common everyday choice with a far wider range of styles. We do not sell titanium earrings.

Can I be allergic to sterling silver?

Yes, it is possible, though a reaction to a piece sold as sterling is more often down to another metal in the piece, such as a plated base, a clasp or a back, than to the silver itself. The American Academy of Dermatology includes silver among the metals that can cause a jewelry rash. If you have reacted to sterling before, try one pair, watch your ears, and stop if the rash returns.

Is stainless steel good for sensitive ears?

It depends on your sensitivity. Stainless steel contains nickel, so it suits some sensitive ears and not others, and anyone with a confirmed nickel allergy should be careful. Only five styles here are steel, all 316L huggie hoops; the rest are sterling silver based.

Are hoop earrings good for sensitive ears?

The shape matters less than the metal and the fit. Small huggie hoops sit close to the lobe and hoops here come on a 925 sterling silver base, apart from five 316L steel huggies. Shop huggie earrings or hoop earrings and check the base metal on each page.

Which of these earrings need no piercing?

Three cuff styles: a cross ear cuff, a hook ear cuff and a twisted cuff. They sit on the ear without a piercing and all three are on a 925 sterling silver base. See cuff earrings for the full set.

Is there a legal limit on nickel in earrings?

In the European Union, yes. REACH Annex XVII, entry 27 restricts post assemblies inserted into pierced ears to a nickel release below 0.2 micrograms per square centimetre per week, and other articles in prolonged skin contact to below 0.5. We quote it as a benchmark for how seriously nickel is treated, not as a certification of any AJLuxe piece.

Where can I buy hypoallergenic earrings?

Right here. This page holds 51 styles of hypoallergenic earrings from $22.99: huggies, studs, hoops, dangles and cuffs, with the base metal named on every product page.

How many reviews do these earrings have?

2,098 reviews across these 51 styles, at a 4.49 average.

What to know before you choose

What hypoallergenic means for earrings

Hypoallergenic earrings are less likely to cause a reaction, which is not the same as never causing one. The usual trigger is nickel: the American Academy of Dermatology reports that more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to it, and it names earrings among the biggest culprits. A rash can also come from other metals, so the useful question about any pair is what it is made of.

What these earrings are made of

We read the base metal from every product page, not from tags. Finish varies by pair: 18K gold plated, rhodium plated or left as polished metal.

Base metalStylesIn stockWhat to know
925 sterling silver4640Studs, hoops, huggies, dangles and cuffs. Sterling is widely worn on sensitive ears but is not safe for everyone.
316L stainless steel54All huggie hoops. Steel contains nickel, so we say hypoallergenic, never nickel-free.

Sterling silver, and what the number means

In the US, sterling silver has to be at least 92.5 percent pure silver under the FTC jewelry guides. The remaining share is other metals, usually copper. That alloy is a common choice for sensitive ears and the dermatologists list pure sterling among metals to choose, but a small number of people still react to it.

316L steel, hypoallergenic but not nickel-free

316L stainless steel contains nickel. Many people wear it without trouble, yet a confirmed nickel allergy is a reason to choose sterling silver instead. Our five steel pairs are huggie hoops, and you can read the honest answer on surgical steel before you pick one.

Gold plating and the metal under it

Plating is a thin layer and can wear first where the post rubs. What sits underneath is what stays against your skin, which is why each listing names the base. Browse our huggie earrings and stud earrings to compare finishes.

Healed ears only, and cuffs for no piercing

These are not meant for fresh piercings. The Association of Professional Piercers lists implant-grade steel, titanium, niobium and solid 14k or higher gold as suitable for a new piercing and says plated jewelry is not acceptable, and none of our earrings are titanium or niobium. If you have no piercing, three cuff styles need none.

Care and returns

Wipe posts with a soft cloth after wear and keep pairs dry; see our jewelry care guide. Returns are accepted within 30 days for unworn earrings in their original packaging, and return shipping is free. Delivery and shipping details are on the shipping page.
