August Birthstone Jewelry — Peridot Necklaces & Gifts

August has three birthstones: peridot (the traditional choice), spinel (added in 2016), and sardonyx (an ancient alternative). Of the three, peridot is the most immediately recognizable — its distinc…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the august birthstone?

Peridot. See august birthstone meaning for the full history and tradition behind it.

Which pieces here are genuine gemstones, and which are CZ?

Peridot Pendant Necklace — genuine peridot, checked against the product listing. Every other piece in this collection, including the birthstone stud earrings, clover necklace and charm necklace (each available in all 12 birthstone colors), uses cubic zirconia rather than a genuine stone.

Is this a genuine gemstone?

Only 1 of the 5 pieces here is — the rest, including the birthstone stud earrings, clover necklace and charm necklace (each available in all 12 birthstone colors), use cubic zirconia. See the breakdown above.

Is everything actually in stock?

All in stock. We hold our own inventory rather than dropshipping, so anything listed as available is on our shelves and ready to ship.

How fast will it arrive?

Orders placed before 12pm EST ship the same day; everything else ships the next business day. Delivery inside the USA takes 3–5 days from dispatch, and shipping is free with no minimum order.

What color is peridot?

Peridot is exclusively green — ranging from pale lime yellow-green to deeper olive green. Unlike most gemstones, peridot's green is caused by iron integral to its olivine crystal structure, not by trace impurities. This means no treatment can change its color. The finest peridot (from Pakistan's Kohistan region) shows pure vivid green. Arizona peridot (most commercial supply) tends toward olive or slightly yellow-green.

Is peridot the same as green diamond?

No. Peridot is olivine (Mohs 6.5–7, warm yellow-green from inherent iron). Green diamond is carbon (Mohs 10, cool vivid green from natural radiation exposure during formation). Natural green diamonds are among the rarest colored diamonds and cost thousands per carat; fine peridot costs tens to hundreds per carat. They look and behave completely differently.

What is spinel?

Spinel is magnesium aluminum oxide (MgAl₂O₄), a separate mineral from corundum (ruby/sapphire) that forms in the same environments and similar colors. Key facts: Mohs 8 (excellent durability), nearly always untreated (natural state with no heat treatment or filling — very rare in colored stones), full color range (red, pink, blue, purple, grey), and exceptional value relative to visual quality.

Why is spinel undervalued?

Spinel lacks the name recognition and marketing history of ruby and sapphire despite matching or exceeding their quality. Nearly always untreated (a major purity advantage), Mohs 8, vivid in multiple colors — and the famous 'Black Prince's Ruby' in the British Imperial State Crown is actually a spinel. Added to the August birthstone list in 2016, spinel offers excellent gem quality at prices well below comparable ruby or sapphire.

Is peridot safe for everyday wear?

Yes for pendants and earrings at 6.5–7 Mohs. For rings, a bezel setting is recommended as peridot has two cleavage directions making it somewhat chip-prone from direct impacts. Peridot is sensitive to acids — clean with neutral soap and water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners. In non-impact jewelry settings, peridot holds up well for daily wear.

What makes peridot green?

Peridot's green comes from iron that is a fundamental component of the olivine crystal structure — not a trace impurity but part of the mineral's own chemistry. This is why no treatment can change its color. The iron-to-magnesium ratio and trace nickel content determine whether the green is olive, lime, or vivid — higher nickel in fine Pakistani peridot correlates with purer, more vivid green.

Does peridot fade?

No. Peridot's iron-based color is stable and does not bleach or fade from normal light exposure. However, some peridot can develop surface browning from prolonged acid contact (sweat, cleaning products). Cleaning with neutral pH soap and thorough rinsing after wearing prevents this. The color itself is stable under typical wear and light conditions.

What does peridot symbolize?

Peridot is called the 'gem of the sun' — ancient Egyptians believed it held solar power and protected against night terrors. Hawaiian tradition called peridot crystals the tears of volcano goddess Pele. Medieval Europeans used it for strength and healing. Today, peridot symbolizes strength, clarity of purpose, and summer's energy — fitting for August's peak-season birthday significance.

What to know before you choose

August's birthstone

What's genuine, what's CZ

Match it across formats

The birthstone stud earrings, clover necklace and charm necklace here each come in all 12 birthstone colors, so you can match a set across earrings and necklace formats for the same month rather than choosing just one piece.
