- Structure: thanks, the specific gift, what it means to you, a warm close.
- Timing: one guide says aim for 2 to 3 weeks and finish within three months; another also says three months. Gifts that arrive late still get a prompt note.
- Handwrite where you can, and write something specific for each person.
- Cash gifts: sources disagree on naming the amount. Name what you will use it for either way.
- Do not forget parents, the wedding party, and anyone who helped.
After a wedding, the thank you notes are the part nobody enjoys planning and everybody remembers. This page is written from the couple's side: what a good note contains, when to send it, and ready-to-adapt wording for cash, a physical gift, a shower gift, a guest who came but gave nothing, a group gift and a gift that arrives late. At the end is a short section on thanking the people who carried your wedding, with a jewelry gift if you want one. If you are the guest writing the card that goes with a present, our guide to how much to give as a wedding gift covers the giving side.
What Should a Wedding Thank You Note Say?
A good note has four parts: an expression of thanks, the specific gift or contribution named, what you appreciate about it, and a warm closing. A thank-you guide from a card company lists those elements among its must-haves (the thanks, the gift by name, something you appreciate about it and a classic sign-off). An invitation-focused guide stresses personalizing each note rather than sending a generic printed message, and says to sign off with your name and your partner's name.
- Thank them by name. "Dear Aunt Rosa."
- Name the gift. "Thank you for the glass serving set." If you are not sure what to call it, describe it.
- Say what it means. Where it will live, how you will use it, or what you were thinking when you opened it.
- Close warmly. A line about how glad you were they came or how much it meant to have them with you, then both names.
When Should You Send Wedding Thank You Notes?
Aim for two to three weeks, and treat three months as the outer limit. A card-company guide says ideally within 2 to 3 weeks and complete within three months of the wedding, and adds that finishing within three months means you will not offend anyone. The invitation-focused guide also says to send within three months. For gifts that arrive after the wedding, our own advice is to thank the giver as soon as the gift arrives. An etiquette authority we read, in its page on choosing a wedding gift, says gifts should be sent before the wedding or as soon after as possible, and on the outside within three months of the wedding, while calling the one-year rumor wrong. Even so, late gifts do show up. Thank them on receipt.
Handwritten or Printed?
Handwritten is better, and the card-company guide we read says handwriting is strongly preferred and that digital thank yous read as less heartfelt. Printed cards can carry the design, but the message inside should still be written by you. A sensible split, labelled as our own judgment: write a few warm lines for each guest and use the same card design throughout.
Wedding Thank You Card Wording Templates
Every template below is original wording. Replace the details with something true, because specifics are what make a thank you note feel real.
Thank You for a Cash or Check Gift
For money, thank them for the gift and tell them what it will be used for. Examples:
- "Dear Aunt Rosa, thank you so much for your generous gift. We are putting it toward the sofa we have been dreaming about for our first apartment, and we will think of you every time we sit down. It meant so much to have you there. With love, Maya and Jordan."
- "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez, thank you for your kind and generous gift. It is going toward our honeymoon fund, and we cannot wait to tell you about the trip. Thank you for celebrating with us. Warmly, Maya and Jordan."
Should you name the amount? The sources we read disagree. The invitation-focused guide says some couples like to specify the amount and others do not. The card-company guide says it is polite to specify the amount. A practical way to choose: if the gift came by mail or was handed to someone else, naming the amount confirms it arrived. If it came in a card box on the night, describe what you will use it for and leave the number out. Either approach is reasonable.
Thank You for a Physical Gift
- "Dear Priya, thank you for the beautiful ceramic baking dish. We used it the first weekend we were home and it was perfect. It meant a lot to have you celebrate with us. Love, Maya and Jordan."
- "Dear Uncle Tom, thank you for the framed print. It now hangs over our front door, so everyone sees it first. We are so glad you were there. Love, Maya and Jordan."
If you received something you will not use, thank them for the thought and for being there. Do not lie about the item. "Thank you for thinking of us and for the thoughtful gift" is honest and kind.
Thank You for a Shower Gift
The card-company guide we read says that most registry gifts are given during a bridal shower, so a thank you has probably already been sent for them. If you send a shower thank you, name the gift and the day:
- "Dear Grace, thank you for the lovely linen napkins and for hosting such a warm shower. Seeing everyone together made the day even more real. With love, Maya."
For the guests who gave a shower gift and later a wedding gift, send two notes, one for each. If you are the host or a hostess, our wedding shower hostess gift guide has ideas for thanking the person who threw it.
Thank You for Coming When They Gave No Gift
For a guest who gave no gift, thank them for being there and say nothing about presents. Example:
- "Dear Daniel, thank you for coming all this way to celebrate with us. Having you there made the day. We would love to see you soon. Love, Maya and Jordan."
Never imply a gift was expected. A thank you for attendance alone is warm and complete. If you want to thank every guest with a small token, see thank you gifts for wedding guests.
Thank You for a Group Gift
For a gift from a group, send one note to the whole group (addressed to the person who organized it) and add a line for each name if you can. Example:
- "Dear Maria and everyone at the office, thank you for the generous gift and for the card signed by all of you. We are using it toward a weekend trip, and we will bring back photos. It meant so much to hear from all of you. Thank you again. Maya and Jordan."
If you know who chipped in, thank each person in a line or send each a short note. If not, ask the organizer to share it.
Thank You for a Late Gift
Thank them promptly when it arrives, and do not apologize for the date. Our own rule: thank them on the day it arrives, whatever the date. Example:
- "Dear Cousin Leila, thank you for the thoughtful gift that arrived this week. It was a lovely surprise and we have already put it to use. We are sorry we could not have you with us, and we hope to see you soon. Love, Maya and Jordan."
A late gift is not a late thank you. Treat it as a fresh occasion.
Thank You to Someone Who Could Not Attend
If someone sent a gift but could not come, thank them for the gift and say you missed them. The card-company guide lists those who sent gifts remotely among the people to thank. Example: "Dear Uncle Ben, thank you for the beautiful gift. We missed you so much and wish you could have been with us. We will send photos soon. Love, Maya and Jordan."
Short and Sweet Thank You Wording
If you have a large guest list, a short note is better than no note. Examples:
- "Thank you for celebrating with us and for your thoughtful gift. We are so grateful."
- "Thank you for sharing our day and for the lovely gift. We felt your love."
- "Thank you for being there. Your gift was so generous and we are already enjoying it."
Add the specific gift and one detail and each of those becomes a full note.
How to Keep Track of Who Gave What
Keep one list from the first shower gift on, because a note is hard to write when you cannot remember who gave which box. A simple spreadsheet or notebook works: the giver's name, the gift, the date it arrived, the note you wrote and whether it has been mailed. Photograph the card that came with each gift as you open it. This is our own method, not a sourced rule, and it saves you from a pile of opened gifts with no names attached.
Who Should You Thank?
Thank everyone who gave, helped or showed up. The card-company guide we read lists all guests, plus-ones, parents, the wedding party, vendors, those who sent gifts remotely and anyone who contributed generously. Parents and the wedding party often get more than a card, so the next section covers them.
Thanking Parents and the Wedding Party
The wedding party and parents usually get a longer personal note, and many couples add a small gift. A written note naming something specific they did does more than the gift, so write it first. Examples:
- To a bridesmaid: "Thank you for standing next to me all morning, for holding my hem, and for the speech that made everyone cry. I could not have done this without you."
- To a parent: "Thank you for everything you did to make this day possible, and for everything before it. We love you."
If you would like to add a gift, jewelry works when it is personal and not pretending to be the thank you itself. Honest options from AJLuxe:
- A personalized initial necklace. The Heart Initial Necklace ($34.99) has a letter A to Z, 18K gold plating over a 316L stainless steel base (not sterling silver), and adjusts from 16 to 18 inches. It is personalized, so it is final sale, and you should confirm the letter before ordering. It suits a bridesmaid or a mother.
- A simple pair of studs. The CZ Stud Earrings ($22.99 to $23.99) have a 925 sterling silver post with rhodium plating and cubic zirconia stones in five sizes. They are for pierced ears and suit someone who wears earrings daily.
For gift ideas by role, see gifts for bridesmaids, gifts for the maid of honor, gifts for the mother of the bride and gifts for the mother of the groom. Many of these can also be browsed in our gifts for her collection. Our range is mostly women's jewelry, so for the best man and groomsmen we suggest a handwritten note first and a gift from a shop that sells what they would actually want.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are some good messages to write in a wedding thank you card?
A good message names the gift and says what it means to you. For example: "Thank you for the beautiful serving dish. We used it the first weekend we were home. It meant so much to have you there." Sign with both names.
How do I write a wedding thank you card for money?
Thank them for the generous gift and say what you will use it for, such as a honeymoon, a sofa or savings. Sources disagree on naming the amount: one says some couples do and some do not, another says it is appropriate and shows the gift arrived. Describing the use works either way.
What should I write in a thank you note after a wedding?
Include thanks, the specific gift, what you appreciate about it, and a warm close signed by both of you. A card-company guide lists the thanks, the gift by name, something you appreciate about it and a sign-off among its must-haves.
How do you write a short and sweet thank you card?
Thank them, name the gift in a few words, and say you were glad they were there. For example: "Thank you for sharing our day and for the lovely gift. We felt your love." Add one specific detail to make it personal.
What is a beautiful message to say thank you?
A beautiful thank you is specific and sincere. "Thank you for being part of the day we will remember all our lives" works for any guest, and naming one moment (a toast, a dance, a long trip to get there) makes it personal.
What is a good opening line for a thank you card?
Start with the person's name and the thanks: "Dear Aunt Rosa, thank you so much for your generous gift." Do not open with an apology for the timing.
How long do I have to send wedding thank you cards?
Two sources we read say to finish within three months of the wedding, and one of them says to aim for 2 to 3 weeks. Late gifts still get a prompt note when they arrive.
Do I thank a guest who did not give a gift?
Yes, thank them for coming. A note thanking them for attending is complete without mentioning a gift, and it avoids implying one was expected.
