Gift for Christening From Godmother: What to Give by Age

What a godmother can give her godchild at a christening, baptism or First Communion: keepsake ideas by age, a safety check for jewelry and young children, a gift for the parents, and card wording.

What gift should a godmother give her godchild at a christening? Something lasting that the child can keep and grow into, with a few handwritten words from you. For a baby that usually means a keepsake stored for later, not something worn on the day, and for a gift you do want worn, the safest recipient is the parent. This page covers the gift a godmother gives to her godchild (godson or goddaughter), for a christening, baptism or First Communion.
TL;DR for a godmother choosing a christening gift
  • Choose a keepsake, not a one day gift. The best godmother gifts are the ones a child still has at 16 or 30.
  • Do not put jewelry on a baby. Chains and small parts are a poor fit for infants, so give jewelry as something to store until she or he is older.
  • Adult-sized jewelry is not children's jewelry. AJLuxe pieces are made for adults and teens, and we do not sell them as children's products.
  • Add the words. A short card from you is the part that becomes more valuable with time.
  • There is no fixed amount. Customs differ by family and tradition, so spend what is comfortable.

A christening is one of the few occasions where the gift is really for the future. The child will not remember the day, so the piece you choose is a message to someone who will read it years from now. This guide helps you choose a gift for a baby, toddler or older child, explains what to check before you give any jewelry to a young child, and gives you wording for the card. It sits alongside our guide to baptism jewelry gifts (the traditional pieces and how to store them) and our page on gifts for a godmother, which covers the other direction: what the parents or the godchild give to a godmother.

What Does a Godmother Give Her Godchild at a Christening?

A godmother usually gives a lasting keepsake, often the most personal gift of the day, and there is no single rule that applies to every family. Shops that specialize in christening gifts list crosses and charms, blankets, pearl pieces and keepsake sets, which tells you the market leans toward objects the child keeps. What that means for you is a simple test: choose something that will still make sense when the child is much older.

Three questions narrow the choice quickly:

  • Will it still be safe and useful as the child grows? A keepsake stored in a drawer is safe for a baby, while a bracelet sized for an adult is not a baby gift.
  • Is it personal? An initial, a date or a birth month beats a generic item.
  • Does it carry your words? A short note makes any gift yours.

Customs about godparents and gifts vary between Christian traditions and between families. If you are unsure what is expected, ask the parents, or the person who arranged the ceremony, rather than guessing.

How Much Should a Godmother Spend?

There is no standard amount, and we did not find a reliable source that sets one, so we do not give a figure. The sensible approach is to spend what you can afford comfortably and let the personal details carry the meaning. A small piece with the child's initial and a heartfelt card is a better gift than a costly one that feels generic. The goal is a gift you are happy to give, not one that strains your budget.

Christening Gifts From a Godmother, by the Child's Age

The gift changes more with the child's age than with the ceremony, so start with how old your godchild is. The table is the quick version, and the sections after it explain each row.

Child's age What suits a godmother's gift What to avoid
Baby (christening) A keepsake to store (a book, a framed card, a savings contribution, a piece of jewelry kept for later), plus a note Anything worn on a baby that has a chain or small parts
Toddler A book you can read together, a keepsake box, a gift for the parents Small, mouthable items
Child (about 4 to 12) A gift made and sold for children, plus a keepsake to keep until older Adult jewelry worn as a toy or dress up
Teen A simple initial or birthstone necklace and a note about the day she or he was christened Anything flashy that does not fit their taste

For a baby at the christening

For a baby, the best gift is one that is stored safely and given later. A piece of jewelry works in that role if you treat it as a keepsake: wrap it, add a card, and ask the parents to keep it until the child is old enough. Our baptism jewelry gift guide explains how to store a gift like this.

For a toddler or young child

For a younger child, choose a gift made and sold for children. A book to read together, a keepsake box or time spent together all fit. Jewelry for this age is a separate product category with its own rules, which the next section explains.

For an older child or teen

For a teen, a simple necklace is a natural fit, because it is small, easy to wear and personal. A piece with the teen's initial or birth month, plus a card recalling the christening, turns a modern gift into a link to that day. Our goddaughter gift guide covers birthdays and other occasions after the ceremony.

Is Jewelry a Safe Christening Gift for a Baby or Young Child?

Jewelry is a safe gift for a baby only as a keepsake that is stored, not worn, because a chain or clasp is not designed for an infant. Federal rules also treat jewelry made for young children as its own product category, which is why adult jewelry is the wrong choice for a young child. Here is what we checked.

  • What counts as a children's product. The US federal consumer product safety regulator defines a children's product as a consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger (16 CFR 1200.2, as published by a university law library). The regulation says children's jewelry is generally sized, themed and marketed to children.
  • Lead. The regulator states that children's products containing more than 100 parts per million lead in an accessible component are banned hazardous substances (total lead content page, cpsc.gov).
  • Small parts. The regulator's small parts rules apply to products intended for children under 3, and define a small part as anything that fits entirely into a cylinder that simulates the throat of a child under 3 (small parts guidance, cpsc.gov). The page we read does not address jewelry by name.

What this means for you is practical. If you buy jewelry for a young child, buy it from a seller that designs and sells it as children's jewelry. AJLuxe jewelry is made for adults and teens and is sold as such, so we do not present it as children's jewelry and we do not recommend it for a baby or a young child. What we do recommend is giving one of our pieces as a keepsake the child can wear when they are older, or as a gift for the parent.

A Keepsake Necklace to Keep Until She or He Is Older

A keepsake necklace is a good godmother gift when it is chosen for the person the child will become, then stored and given at the right age. Two AJLuxe pieces suit that role, and each product page lists what it is made of.

  • Heart Initial Necklace, $34.99. A script letter with a small heart. The product page lists a 316L stainless steel base with 18K gold plating (not sterling silver), a 16 inch chain with a 2 inch extender and a pendant of about 12mm by 10mm, with a gift ready box. Choose the child's initial. It is personalized, which means it is final sale, so confirm the letter before you order.
  • Birthstone necklaces. A birth month piece is a natural fit for a christening because the date is close to the birth. Browse the birthstone necklaces collection, and read each product page for the chain material and the stone, which on these pieces is simulated or lab created, not mined.

Pair either one with a card, and agree with the parents when it will be given, for example at a First Communion, a milestone birthday or when the child turns 13. For more ideas by price, see our personalized jewelry collection.

A Gift for the Parents Instead

A gift for the parent is a good godmother choice when the child is too young for jewelry, because the parent can wear it now and it still marks the day. The Mom Heart Necklace shows a mother and child inside a heart, set with CZ stones (cubic zirconia, not diamond), on a 316L stainless steel base and a 16 inch chain with a 2 inch extender, and it is gift boxed per its product page. Its stock is limited, so check availability before you plan around it. For a parent who prefers something simpler, the Heart Initial Necklace works with the baby's initial. Our guides to new mom jewelry gifts and personalized gifts for new moms have more.

What About First Communion and Later Milestones?

A godmother often gives again at a later milestone such as First Communion, and the same rules apply: choose something the child can use at that age, with a card from you. For a First Communion the right piece depends on your tradition and the family, and our First Communion jewelry guide walks through the options. AJLuxe does not sell saint medals or rosaries, so for a religious piece it is better to buy from a seller that specializes in them, and use a piece from us as a personal extra.

Does a Godson Get a Different Gift Than a Goddaughter?

A godson and a goddaughter can receive the same kind of gift, because a keepsake is about the person, not the gender. Choose by the child's taste, the family's traditions and the age. A birth month piece, a book, a keepsake box or a savings contribution suits either one. If you are unsure, an initial is a neutral choice.

What to Write on the Card

A good card is short, specific and written by you. These openings work for most families:

  • "On the day you were christened, I promised to be there for you. This is a small way to start."
  • "I am so proud to be your godmother. Keep this until you are older, and know that I was thinking of you on this day."
  • "For [name], with love from your godmother, [date]."

Add one detail only you know, such as what the day was like or what you hope for the child. Skip anything about religious belief that you are not sure the parents share.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good gift for a christening from a godmother?

A good gift is a lasting keepsake that the child can use when older, with a handwritten card. A book, a keepsake box, a savings contribution or a piece of jewelry stored for later all work, and a gift for the parents is also fine. Choose something personal, such as the child's initial or birth month.

How much should a godparent give for a christening?

There is no fixed amount, and customs differ by family and tradition. Spend what you can afford comfortably and let the personal details carry the meaning. If you want guidance, ask the parents or a family member who has been a godparent.

What are some traditional christening gifts from godparents?

Specialist christening shops list crosses, charms, blankets, pearl pieces and keepsake sets, and many families also choose books or savings gifts. Traditions differ by denomination and country, so the best guide is what your own family or congregation usually does.

What can I get my godson for his baptism?

Choose a keepsake that suits any age, such as a book, a keepsake box or a piece of jewelry stored until he is older. A birth month or initial piece makes it personal. Do not choose anything with a chain or small parts to be worn by a baby.

What is the best gift for a goddaughter?

The best gift is one she can keep and grow into, with a note from you. For a baby, store a keepsake for later. For a teen, a simple initial or birthstone necklace is a natural fit, and our goddaughter gift guide covers other occasions.

Is a necklace safe to give a baby?

A necklace is not a safe thing to put on a baby, because chains and clasps are not designed for infants. Give it as a keepsake that is stored until the child is older. The US federal consumer product safety regulator treats jewelry designed for children 12 and under as a children's product, and AJLuxe jewelry is adult-sized and sold as adult jewelry.

Do you give gifts to godparents at a baptism?

Some families give the godparents a small thank-you gift, and others do not, so it depends on the family and tradition. If you are the godmother and want ideas for what the family might give you, see our guide to gifts for a godmother.
