Necklace lengths are usually explained with a static chart, but a number in inches doesn't tell you much on its own. This tool shows you instead: slide to any length and watch exactly where it falls — base of the neck, collarbone, bust, or waist — so you can picture it before you buy.

Choosing a length by neckline
- Crew neck or high collar: matinee or opera length sits below the fabric instead of getting hidden by it.
- V-neck: a pendant on a princess or matinee chain follows the V and draws the eye down.
- Off-shoulder or strapless: a choker fills the exposed neckline without competing with a plunging neckline.
- Collared shirt: princess length sits neatly at or just below the collar without disappearing under it.
- Layering multiple necklaces: keep at least 2 inches between each length so they hang separately instead of tangling.

Necklace length FAQ
What is the most flattering necklace length?
Princess length (16–19 inches) is the most universally flattering, since it falls at or just below the collarbone and works with almost every neckline — crew, V-neck, collared shirts, and off-shoulder tops. If you only own one necklace length, this is the safest choice.
How do I know what necklace length to buy for someone else?
If you can't measure them directly, princess length (18 inches) is the best default gift length — it suits the widest range of necklines and body types. For a more personal fit, look at a necklace they already wear often and measure it end to end, or ask what length their favorite piece is.
What's the difference between a choker and a princess necklace?
A choker sits snugly at the base of the neck, around 14–16 inches, and works best with open necklines like off-shoulder or crew-neck tops. A princess necklace is longer, 16–19 inches, and falls at or just below the collarbone — it's the more versatile of the two and pairs well with almost any neckline, including collared shirts.
Can one necklace length work with every outfit?
Princess length comes closest, but most people who wear necklaces daily own two or three lengths — a shorter one (choker or princess) for higher necklines and a longer one (opera or rope) that can also be doubled up for a shorter, layered look. Layering two different lengths together is also a simple way to get more use out of pieces you already own.
How much longer should a necklace be to layer it?
As a rule of thumb, leave at least 2 inches of length difference between layered necklaces so they don't tangle or sit on top of each other — for example, a 16-inch choker under an 18–20 inch pendant, or an 18-inch princess under a 24-inch matinee.
Does neck size change what length I should buy?
Only slightly. Necklace length is measured as the total closed loop of the chain, not just what shows in front, so the same length looks a little different depending on neck size — someone with a smaller neck will see slightly more chain drop than someone with a larger neck at the same stated length. The category (choker vs. princess vs. opera) still holds true either way.
