"Which metal should I get?" usually turns into a wall of text you have to cross-reference yourself. This tool skips that — pick any two materials below and see hypoallergenic properties, tarnish resistance, water resistance, typical price, and best use side by side.

General care tips that apply across metals

  • Take it off before water activities. Swimming, showering, and hot tubs shorten the life of plating and dull polish on every metal in this comparison.
  • Store pieces separately. Metals and gemstones can scratch each other in a jewelry box — a soft pouch or lined tray prevents most of the wear people blame on "cheap" jewelry.
  • Put jewelry on last. Perfume, lotion, and hairspray applied after your jewelry is on cause more tarnish and plating wear than the metal itself.
  • When mixing metals matters most: if you're combining silver and gold pieces, see our mixed metal jewelry guide for how to do it well.

Jewelry metal comparison FAQ

What's the difference between gold-plated and gold vermeil?

Both start with a base metal — usually sterling silver — coated in a layer of real gold. The difference is thickness: gold vermeil has a legally defined minimum gold layer (2.5 microns in the US) and must be plated over sterling silver or a finer metal, while standard gold-plated jewelry has no minimum thickness requirement and can use a base metal of any type. That thicker layer is why vermeil generally holds its color longer than ordinary gold plating.

Which jewelry metal is best for sensitive skin?

Stainless steel and solid gold are generally the safest bets for sensitive skin, since they're less likely to contain the nickel that causes most metal allergies. Sterling silver and gold-plated pieces can also be hypoallergenic, but it depends on what the base alloy actually contains — look for jewelry explicitly labeled nickel-free rather than assuming based on the metal name alone.

Does sterling silver turn your skin green?

Pure sterling silver itself doesn't typically cause skin discoloration, but the combination of skin acidity, sweat, lotions, and the small amount of copper in the 925 alloy can occasionally cause a temporary green or black tint, especially in humid climates or with prolonged wear. It's a cosmetic residue, not a reaction, and it washes off — it's not a sign the jewelry is low quality.

Is gold-plated jewelry worth buying if it eventually wears off?

Yes, for most people — a well-made gold-plated piece can last one to a few years with reasonable care (avoiding chlorine, saltwater, and harsh chemicals), which is a fair trade for a fraction of the cost of solid gold. If you want something to last indefinitely without any upkeep, gold vermeil or solid gold are the better long-term choices.

How can I tell if a piece will tarnish quickly?

As a general pattern: stainless steel and solid gold resist tarnish the most; gold vermeil holds up longer than standard gold plating because of its thicker gold layer; and sterling silver tarnishes the fastest of the group, though it's also the easiest and cheapest to polish back to new. How often you wear a piece and what it's exposed to — humidity, lotions, chlorine — matters as much as the metal itself.
